The Planet X or Nibiru collision is a supposed disastrous encounter between the Earth and a large planetary object (either a collision or a near-miss) which certain groups believe will take place near 2012. Believers in this doomsday event usually refer to this object as Planet X or Nibiru.
Many speculate that Nibiru is actually a brown dwarf star, that has several planet sized bodies orbiting its mass. The massive object is on an elliptical orbit around our sun, and takes an estimated 3,600 years to complete one orbit. The gravitational shift of the passing object may alone be enough to severely alter the Earth’s orbit and cause earthquakes and tidal phenomena. A possible collision with the object’s orbiting objects and debris field are also cause for great concern. The idea that a planet-sized object could possibly collide with or pass by Earth in the near future has been rejected as pseudoscience by many astronomers and planetary scientists. Ancient Sumerian texts however suggest that Earth did have a close encounter some 7,000 years ago, resulting in disastrous floods, earthquakes and weather changes. Some historians believe that the biblical flood involving Noah’s ark was a result of the previous passing of Planet X. Geological findings suggest that there was indeed a sudden and devastating flood that took place around 5,600 B.C., close enough to the possible time of Noah and the previous speculated passing of Planet X. In fact, there are many biblical prophecies that reference a large cosmic body bringing destruction to earth.
“I watched as he opened the sixth seal. There was a great earthquake. The sun turned black like sackcloth made of goat hair, the whole moon turned blood red, and the stars in the sky fell to earth, as late figs drop from a fig tree when shaken by a strong wind. The sky receded like a scroll, rolling up, and every mountain and island was removed from its place. Then the kings of the earth, the princes, the generals, the rich, the mighty, and every slave and every free man hid in caves and among the rocks of the mountains.”
The idea of a Nibiru collision with earth was first put forward (in recent history) in 1995 by Nancy Lieder. Lieder describes herself as a contactee with the ability to receive messages from extra-terrestrials from the Zeta Reticuli star system through an implant in her brain. She states that she was chosen to warn mankind that the object would sweep through the inner Solar System in May 2003 (though that date was later abandoned) causing Earth to undergo a pole shift that would destroy most of humanity. Lider said “The cause of this natural event will be a planet, known to the ancients but as of yet undiscovered by modern man, which may pass very near the earth as part of its normal 3600 year orbit around the sun. ” The predicted collision has subsequently spread beyond Lieder’s website and has been embraced by numerous Internet doomsday groups, most of which link the event to the 2012 phenomenon.
As silly as extra terrestrial warnings may sound, many other noted astronomers have long speculated of other planets lurking beyond the edge of our known solar system. Percival Lowell (an astronomer who ‘s efforts lead to the discovery of Pluto) was the first to propose this theory in the 1930s. The Voyager space missions in the 1970s further fueled the search of additional planets after observing the odd orbits of Pluto and the gas giants Neptune and Uranus. Scientists hypothesized that Pluto’s gravitational pull is too small to affect the larger gas planets, thus there must be another larger object out there somewhere. However recent studies suggest that the irregularities in orbits were miscalculated due to an inaccurate estimation of Neptune’s mass. Regardless, additional planetoid objects have been since discovered beyond Pluto. One such object dubbed ‘Eris’ (which is actually larger than Pluto) was discovered in 2005 orbiting beyond pluto in the Kuiper Belt. There are many more unknowns about our solar system still waiting to be discovered and Nibiru cant be ruled out just yet.
